REGULATIONS
Students from within the EEA and Switzerland
The EEA (European Economic Area) contains all 28 EU-countries + Iceland, Liechtenstein and Norway. If you belong to this category, you have the same rights and duties as students with the Belgian nationality. This means you do not need a work permit.

Note that every student who stays in Belgium for longer than 3 months needs to register at the foreigner's office of the city hall of the commune where you live in order to get a national number. The national number is obligatory if you want to apply for a student job.

The first 475 hours

As a student, you do not need to pay the same contribution for the social security
(RSZ/ONSS) as a regular employee, but just a small fixed percentage which is called the
"solidarity contribution". Nevertheless there are some conditions linked to this advantage:
⦁ You need to be employed with a student contract.
⦁ You can only work 475 hours a year (calendar, not academic year!) with this
advantage.

Students from outside the EEA
If you belong to this category you will have to request a work permit and fulfill some conditions in order to be permitted to work in Belgium.

 You have a valid residence permit in Belgium and therefore you have a national number.

 You are registered as a student. You need to be registered for a recognized study program/course with a full-time course schedule at a university or university college in Belgium.

 You have a work permit C If you have a Belgian residence permit, you can request a work permit type C. This permit is valid for 12 months and you can work for different employers in Belgium.

What can I do with a work permit C?

⦁ With this card you can work during the academic year with a maximum of 20
hours/week.
⦁ It is valid for maximum 12 months and it needs to be renewed every year. It is
limited for your stay in Belgium as a student and only counts for the academic year
that you are registered as a student.
⦁ It is valid for all activities carried out in Belgium for which you get a salary.
⦁ It can be used to work for different employers.

Note: the 20 hours/week rule is not applicable for official school vacations. You can work more during that period.
